Italian Burger with Basil Mayo

My two favorite flavors of the summer are fresh basil and fresh tomatoes. I love any dish starring these two and when you throw in some mozzarella, I’m done. Anything works with this trio. Heck, I’d probably eat a cake baked up with basil and its two BFFs! So why not a burger? An Italian-spiced burger wrapped up in a caprese cocoon. Delicious!
Hope you enjoy this combination. And you may want to whip up a little extra basil mayo for your french fries. Anybody else dip their fries in mayo??
For the patties
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
3/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 pound ground beef
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
4 tablespoons finely chopped onion
1 tablespoon Red Gold Tomatoes tomato paste
For the basil mayo
2 tablespoons freshly chopped basil
2/3 cup mayo (I use Blue Plate)
4 Hamburger buns
4 slices mozzarella cheese (can use fresh mozzarella)
4 tomato slices
Instructions
In a ramekin or small bowl, mix together Italian seasoning, sea salt and garlic powder. Set aside.
Place ground beef in a large mixing bowl and add Worcestershire sauce. Mix well with hands. Add in onion and tomato paste and mix well with hands.
Sprinkle seasoning mixture evenly over meat and mix well with hands.
Form meat into patties to desired thickness and fry in hot cast iron skillet with a very small bit of oil or cook on an outdoor grill.
When patties are done, lay the mozzarella slices on top of the patties while still in the skillet or on the grill, cover and let melt.
Serve with a toasted bun, tomato slice and basil mayo.
For the basil mayo
In a small bowl, mix fresh basil and mayonnaise together, cover, and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Notes
If you like fresh mozzarella, try it on your burger instead of sliced mozzarella. I love that too!
